Soggy earth, wet togs, soaked hair. The air is humid and buzzing with the sound of voices. My muscles are cramped with the effort of squatting for hours. "And the next race is...." My Howard boomed into the mega phone. My ears pricked up. "Parents vs. children". I forget my cramped muscles and wet hair, my dripping togs and the soggy ground. I crane my head anxiously. This will be good!

Mr Howard raises the clappers in the air and... Bang! Water goes flying as the racers rocket through the air, wetting everybody. The cheering grew louder and louder, as all the pupils of the schools cheered for their representatives. Onto the last lap now, Amy racing ahead of Elli. I got more and more nervous. And....

NOOOOO... I cry. I moan again. "And the winner is Mr Howard announced.....Kids!" Parents were disqualified because Amy slipped under the lane ropes! We all cheer and Hi-5 each other. Kid power!

Waiting - By L.B.

Tick, tock, tick, tock. Eyes half closed, brain taking the day off, totally unfocussed. Glasses exactly half way down my face, heavy breathing. Bored, bored, bored. My fingers tapping out an addictive theme song. "Stop it!" Mum whispered. Lazily I cut it out. All the others in the room relaxed. "Gnrtmrfamaf" I replied. Stiffly, Mum ignored me.
"How long does it take for a boy to get his jabs?" rhetorically Dad questioned. Suddenly my eyes snapped open.

Trembling with fear I shakily whispered, "Pardon?"
"Nothing, nothing at all" Dad replied hurriedly. But I knew better. Dad has said too much. My arms prickled with fear, my lungs pumped like crazy. The butterflies in my stomach turned into elephants. Elephants partying with blue whales. Blue whales who had eaten skyscrapers made of lead. I stared daggers at Dad. If look could kill... But no time to think about that. I was dead meat... on a highway.... in london.

"Next!" droned the voice. My heart leapt into my mouth. I dragged my feet up the aisle, like a prisoner being led to execution. I was taken into a white room, with a spotless bed... my deathbed. I lay down, closed my eyes and waited for the pain. But none came as the needle wormed into my skin. I was alive! I had survived the injection... and the wait!

That was Summer By L.B.

The was Summer - Inspired by Marci Ridlon

Have you every heard summer?
Sure your have.
Remember that time when you were fighting through the weeds, a mass of creepers.
And you just gave up?

Remember how the cicadas sounded and the bees?
That was summer.

Remember that time, when you attempted to build a fort?
If only it hadn't crumbled away...
And you neck was blistering
But you persevered.
Remember how the Tui sounded,
All chirpy and lively?
That was summer.

If you try very hard,
Can you remember the time when you were covered in clay,
And the sun was setting,
And you had to scrub your feet
You had to!
It took a long time to take your shoes off.
Do you remember the sound of sunshine?
That was summer.

Survival Swimming

On Wednesday, room 5 wore old clothes on top of their togs in the pool. Crazy? No, we were learning how to survive in the water with our clothes on. We learnt:
  • How to conserve our body heat.
  • How to do the survival side stroke.
We also did some lengths of the pool in our clothes and felt how hard it was to swim. We can clearly see that it is a bad idea to swim with clothes on.

Here are some photos of us in the pool:

'To Bee or Not to Bee' - Inquiry Unit

This term we have been learning all about pollination. Reading about it, talking about it, writing about it and even viewing it. Through our inquiry unit:

We are learning to:
  • Name the parts of a flower accurately.
  • Make an accurate and detailed model of a flower.
  • Identify the different ways that pollination occurs, and how they differ.
  • Self motivate and regulate to achieve the task at hand.
  • Show self control when working within independent and group situations.
  • Formulate effective open ended questions, relating to the topic.
  • Select resources independently and effectively.
  • Organise notes and record information clearly.
  • Create and present an original and informative project.
We are busy creating project which answer 5 questions surrounding 1 type of pollination.

We are presenting our projects in week 9. Look out for pictures and powerpoints!!

S.R.'s Writing

I understand..

I understand why we go to school.
I understand my friends.
I understand how the lush grass grows.
But I don't understand how we make friends?

I understand how lush grass grows and the beautiful smell of freshly cut grass.
I understand how everything lives than dies.
I understand that you grow everyday.
But what I don't understand is why does everyone care about new things and not appreciate all of the wonderful memories?

I understand how the earth moves every day.
I understand how we can't feel it.
I understand life and death.
But what I don't understand is how life is a treasure and you would make the choice to waste it?

E.M.R's Writing

A Time I Felt Really Annoyed
"Wait!" I complained to my annoying little cousin. "Stop following me!"
"Why?" she said.
"Because! Oh just go do something that doesn't include me".
"Fine you pig" she said to my face and ran off before I could hit her. I bet ya shes the most annoying person in the world, said the voice in the back of my head.
She's spying on you, whispered the wind so quietly that you could hardly hear it. I looked around and soon enough I saw her staring at me like the devil. "Ok, what do you want" I yell. She came out from her hiding place and said,
"I want to know where you always disappear to?"
"Well guess what, you will never ever find out" I reply.
She started to cry.

Waiting
Quickly we drove to A & E. Mum stopped the car, we all got out.

We were there because Dad had a big gash on his hand. We came through the door. Samantha and I got to sit down. Carefully Mum came and sat down. The long boring wait had started. We went into the little kids room. I built a little wall out of little pieces of wood. Boring, boring, boring! Dad finally got called in.
